Rus Rus Hospital
Rus Rus, Gracias a Dios, HondurasLocated only 5 miles from the Nicaragua border, but nearly 60 miles from the nearest Honduran “municipality,” the Rus Rus Hospital was once a medical outpost serving refugee camps. In recent years, in response to increasing need, the hospital has been resurrected and expanded by a husband and wife team of Honduran doctors with a heart for the Miskito people. Drs. Otoniel and Xiomara Collins are both doctors of medicine and surgery who have responded to God’s call to be medical missionaries. Both graduated from medical school in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and after practicing abroad, returned to Honduras where medical needs are so great.
While the population has continued to grow, the lack of medical services has remained a constant for an estimated 25,000 Miskito people living in the Coco River “corridor” along the Honduran/Nicaraguan border.
MAG has partnered with the hospital to bring needed aviation support to Rus Rus. A dedicated aircraft at Rus Rus will be the only means of emergency medical response, and logistics and transportation for medical staff. The aircraft has been acquired and is undergoing modifications for field service (see the September 2009 field report). Construction of facilities is underway which will allow the opening of the mission base in Rus Rus by the spring of 2010.
